The Longitudinal Factors related to the Depression of the Korean Elderly£ºComparison of younger-old and older-old

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal factors related to the change ofdepression of the elderly focusing on the comparison between the younger-old and older-old. Weanalyzed elderly data from the wave 1 to wave 4 of Korean Welfare Panel Study(KWPS). Finalanalysis subjects was 2,766, 2,552, 2,351, and 1,765 in each panel. Dependent variable wasCES-D(Center for Epidemiological studies for Depression Scale), and independent variables wasfamily, health, housing, social, and economic factors. Sex, age, educational level, living area, andreligion are controlled. Fixed effects model of GLD(Generalized Least Squares) was employed toexamine the longitudinal correlations between dependent and independent variables both agegroup. Main results are as follows. Satisfaction with family relation, health, housing environment,and leisure had negative influence on the depression both younger and older-old. Financial statusshowed significant relationship with depression only in younger-old. Our findings suggests thatthe determinant factors of depression of the elderly is family, health, housing environment andleisure satisfaction regardless of age. However, economic status is more important in younger-old.
